Lanificio Luigi Colombo
One of Italy’s Finest Mills
At the foot of the Alps, in Borgosesia, Piedmont, lies Lanificio Luigi Colombo. The family-owned company was founded in 1967 by Luigi Colombo and has since grown to become one of the world’s leading producers of cashmere fabrics and so-called noble fibres.
Noble fibres can best be described as exceptional natural fibres, rare animal fibres of the highest quality. Sourced from animals including goats and camelids, they are often produced in limited quantities. They include cashmere, vicuña, guanaco and camel hair. The fineness, length and quality of the fibres have a significant impact on the feel, character and performance of the finished fabric.
Colombo’s expertise begins with the raw material.
From raw fibre to finished fabric
Colombo follows the material through every stage of the process, from the selection of the raw fibres to spinning, weaving and final finishing.
The raw fibres are selected at source, in the regions where they are produced, before they are spun into yarn and woven into fabric. The subsequent refinement takes place in Italy.
In Borgosesia, Colombo spins, weaves and finishes its fabrics. The finishing process is crucial to how the finished fabric feels, looks and performs. It may, for example, be washed, fulled, brushed, pressed, steamed or raised. Through different treatments, the same base cloth can be given a softer or firmer handle, a more matt or lustrous surface, and a lighter or more substantial character.
A Colombo fabric is the result of far more than an exceptional raw material. The production of a single fabric involves 94 separate stages and 18 intermediate quality controls.
