peder stenberg

Our Scandinavian identity is founded on values and driven by storytelling. Together with the Swedish menswear magazine Scandinavian MAN, we've gathered eight personalities that innovate our times within music, movies, food, and interiors.

Meet Peder Stenberg, the lead singer, and one of the songwriters in the Swedish band Deportees.

Photography Dan Sjölund.

Deportees was founded in 2003 and has released five albums since. The latest, called ’The Big Sleep’, was released in 2015to a great response. Their last two albums won the Swedish Grammy award, in the category ’This year’s rock’. This spring, the band will release their new EP, ’Re-dreaming’.

Peder, tell us about what you do and what you have done?

I’m the singer, lyricist and one of the songwriters in Deportees. I’ve done some other stuff – most notably writing a doctoral thesis in Ethnology between 2004 and 2011 –but music has been my true calling ever since I was a young hardcore kid in Umeå.

What does your background mean to you as an artist?

Everything I guess. Does ethnology influence your creation of music? —In some ways, sure. Ethnologic research is often rooted in a wish to understand the times thatwe are living in, something I hope can be said of my lyrics.

What is goingon for you right now?

We’re notoriously slow when it comes to composing and recording our music, but we have recently released a new single called ‘Bright Eyes’ and in May an EP called ‘Re-dreaming’ will see the light of day.

In what situation do you feel the most inspired and what is it that inspires you?

Inspiration is a remarkable and highly unpredictable force. If I knewhow it worked, it wouldn’t take four years between every album. My current method is mimicking a regular 9 to 5 job, but I’m seriously beginning to doubt its effectivity.

What is the most important theme for you in your creative expression right now, and how do you express it?

Deportees last album, ‘The Big Sleep’ from 2015, had an apocalyptic theme. And although the world is still very much a terrifying place, we wanted to look ahead and call for new dreams on our coming EP and album.

What is the message with the forthcoming EP?

This is us looking ahead. It’s true, we’re living in dark times and dark times calls for dark music, but we also badly need new dreams free from nostalgia. Re-dreaming is a loving assault on the feeling of a lost future. Not because it’s necessarily a false prophecy, but because it’s a dangerous one.

How important is your appearance for your ability to convey your message?

I feel good when I look good and I want to feel good when I’m on stage. But none of us in Deportees are, sadly, David Bowie.

What values do youmost value in others?

Kindness, humility and humour.

How important is your Scandinavian identity?

It’s not important in the sense that I think or talk about it very often, but I’m a rather stereotypical Scandinavian in many ways.

What is your next step as an artist?

Now that the new music is finished it’s time for the easy and rewarding part: watching it come alive. And I can hardly wait.
